Mercy Burton Russell, MSW, EDD

With 40 years of experience in psychiatry, family and group therapy, education, leadership consultation, organizational development, and research, Mercy brings a compassionate and insightful perspective to any family or group experience.

At Carleton College, Mercy studied English literature withan unofficial minor in Modern Dance and pre-med studies. Her early work experiences in Board Development for Planned Parenthood of Vermont, Executive Education at Business Week magazine and Medical Systems and Institutional Research at the University of Vermont directed her into a joint MSW/DSW program at UCLA. Following her training at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and Del Amo Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital, she returned to Vermont to work in addictions as well sexual abuse and offender treatment and consultation. Her postgraduate studies in Bowen Family Systems Theory supported a lively private practice and professional education leadership. Mercy brought her clinical and organizational eye to the workplace through Workplace Solutions Employee Assistance Programs for local industries including IBM, General Dynamics, Keurig, Vermont Blue Cross Blue Shield and Northwestern Medical Center.

Mercy has special interests in emotional and social recovery during life changes, the challenges of interracial and cross cultural social experience, and geographic mobility. She is a student of neuroscience and the intuitive arts. 

Searching for a theoretical basis for her practice,  Mercy found Bowen Family Systems Theory to be a powerful lens for understanding human behavior and experience. Trained at the Georgetown Family Center in Washington, D.C. she was the Founding President of the Vermont Center for Family Studies. As a speaker, she has presented across the country and internationally. Pursuing her interest in leadership consultation, she trained with John Engels of Leadership Coaching in Rochester, NY. and then completed a doctorate in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies at the University of Vermont under the direction of Kieran Killeen, Ph.D.

Her independent research focused on the business practices and entrepreneurship of psychotherapists who transitioned to leadership consultation in the for-profit sector.
